Twits Rally 111. 17th-19th October 2003
If it only happens every 13 years its gotta be good
What a great way to finish off a weeks holiday. We'd been to Scarborough for an Autumn holiday in one of them big static caravans. Only reason is it was cheap and Carol wanted to visit Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay with the ankle biter. Friday morning we got up just in time to be evicted from our caravan as the cleaners turned up with their vacuum's (or should that be vacii). As we were in the car for this we just loaded up and headed off to the Twits rally down in Buckinghamshire. We'd already checked with the Twits to make sure it was OK to arrive in the cage. Puker had hummed and hawed a wee bit but Carol finaly convinced him it wasnt really worth returning to Scotland to get the bike.
On the way down to the rally we stopped in at Coalville for a wee visit to the Victoria Bikers Pub and it was shut.
We got to the rally at 3:30. A record for us. A warm welcome awaited as Puker and the rest of the twits were in the book in tent. Wed parked the cage in a pub car park so had to carry all our kit round to the campsite. The twits had set up a huge marquee complete with the smartest rally bar youve ever seen. We headed off to get some grub and found a local chippie. Good grub and quite cheap too which was surprising for the area. After we'd fed we went back down to the rally site and headed for the aforementioned bar. The marquee was quite quiet as many punters were settled in the adjoining pub. Still we were there and so were a few of the Special K members. We just sat drinking and blethering all night. The large amount of real ale we were consuming wasn't really having the desired effect as we were both strugling to get rid of the flu which we'd had all week. Or maybe it was just imitation Southern beer.
Saturday we'd planned to take the junior person to the Great Brittish Museum in Chelsea but she didnt seem to want to leave the rally so we just settled in to take in the atmosphere. The sun was shinning and it was almost warm enough to get the tee shirts off and catch some rays. Complete contrast to through the night when it was absolutely freezing. We just lay on the gras with a few beers and blethered to Charlie, Kenny and Colin from the Special K and Barry from the Twits. A cracking way to spend an afternoon. Evening time again and it was off to find food. There was a wee shed in the pub garden which they'd set up to do breakfasts which was open and selling excellent steak rolls and chips. That'll do nicely. No queing at the pub for a table and no need to leave the site to go to the chippie. We did leave breifly to pick up a wee carry oot as the shorts on sale were tiny and I realy wanted whisky to kill of the flu. Back to the marquee. Enteertainment was provided by the Twits in house DJ who was armed with a PA system and boxes upon boxes of 12" vynil records. Music was of the 60's,70's, 80's, 50's, 60's, 70's variety which was good enough to see most people up on the dance floor. A great party was had by all. Even Kenny who was pestered by wee Cheri all night, or was it Cheri who was pestered by Kenny. Dunno which but I can vaguely remember her getting him to do a penguin dance across the floor.
Sunday morning there were the usual awards and raffle. Didn't know any of the winners except Jock Welsh who got Longest distance male. Well done Jock.
After a cracking breakfats from the garden shed it was time to head North and home. This time we stopped in at the
Victoria Bikers Pub and it wasn't shut. We had a quick beer and a breif chinwag with John & Nita the pub owners. We headed off again and instead of going the quickest route home we went up to the Squires Cafe at Sherburn in Elmet for a bite to eat.
As I said a great wee rally and the perfect end to a weeks holiday. Hopefully I'll be around in 13 years time to go to the Twits Rally twits 1111.
